How to measure
Find your natural waist
Wrap the tape around your natural waist, where you normally wear jeans, pants or shorts. This is where the waistband sits.
Choose your inseam
3″ sits well above the knee for a bold, modern look. 5″ hits mid-thigh and is our most popular. 7″ reaches just above the knee for classic coverage.
Match to the chart
Match your waist to the size chart above, then pick your length with the slider.
Quick answers: 34 waist, XL and large
What size swim trunks for a 34 waist?
A 34-inch waist is an L / 34 in Tucann swim trunks, which fits a 33–35 inch natural waist (84–89 cm). Measure your natural waist with a tape rather than going by the size on your jeans label, since jeans labels don't always match a tape measure.
What size is XL in men's swim trunks?
XL is a 36 in Tucann men's swim trunks. It fits a 35–37 inch waist (89–94 cm). The letter sizes map to waist sizes: S is 30, M is 32, L is 34, XL is 36 and XXL is 38.
What size are large swim trunks?
Large is an L / 34 in Tucann swim trunks. It fits a 33–35 inch waist (84–89 cm).
Between sizes?
If you're between sizes, size up for a relaxed feel or size down for a closer, athletic fit. The semi-elastic waistband and adjustable drawstring give you control within each size. Fit is mostly about your waist measurement, then the inseam.

How should swim trunks fit?
Swim trunks should sit snug at your waist without digging in, with the drawstring fine-tuning the fit rather than holding them up. The leg shouldn't pull or flap, and a compression liner should lie flat and feel supportive, not tight. For Tucann trunks, match your natural waist to the chart: a 33–35 inch waist is an L / 34.
Five quick fit checks for your first try-on
- Waist. Snug and flat against your body, with no digging in. A good rule of thumb: you should be able to slide two fingers under the waistband.
- Drawstring. As a general rule, the drawstring is for fine-tuning, not for holding your trunks up. Tucann trunks have a drawstring front with an elastic back.
- Seat and thighs. You can sit, squat and stride without the fabric pulling.
- Hem. It lies flat on your thigh. No flapping, no cutting in.
- Liner. A good liner lies flat, without gaps or bunching, and feels supportive, not tight. More in How should a compression liner fit? below.
For reference, our model Nick is 5′10″ and wears an M in the 5″. Compare lengths side by side in 5-inch vs 7-inch swim trunks, or read how long your swim trunks should be.
How should a compression liner fit?
As a good rule of thumb, a compression liner should feel snug and supportive and sit close to your body, but it should never be tight enough to dig in or leave marks, and it should stay in place when you move. Think of a close-fitting short. No bunching, no gaps, no riding up. You should be able to walk, sit and swim without adjusting anything.
Every Tucann men's swim trunk, in 3″, 5″ and 7″, has the Aqua-Liner built in. It's a compression liner made from the same four-way stretch swim fabric as the shell, and it replaces underwear.

Buying for someone else? How to size a gift
Gift sizing comes down to one number: his natural waist. If you know a pair he already wears, check its waist size and match it to the chart above. If you can't, ask him or estimate, and choose the 5″, our most popular length. The semi-elastic waistband and adjustable drawstring give some give within each size.

Swim trunk sizing FAQ
How should swim trunks fit?
Snug at the waist without digging in, with the drawstring used for fine-tuning. The leg shouldn't pull or flap, and the liner should lie flat and feel supportive, not tight. For Tucann trunks, match your natural waist to the chart.
Should swim shorts be tight or loose?
Neither. They should be snug at the waist and easy through the leg. Tight enough to stay up without cinching the drawstring, loose enough to move.
Are swim trunks supposed to be tight?
No. A compression liner feels snug by design, but the outer shell should never pull or dig in. If the shell feels tight across the seat or thighs, try the next size up.
What size swim trunks for a 34 waist?
L / 34, which fits a 33–35 inch natural waist (84–89 cm). Measure your natural waist with a tape rather than relying on your jeans label.
What size is XL in men's swim trunks?
XL / 36, which fits a 35–37 inch waist (89–94 cm). Tucann letter sizes map to waist sizes, so an L is a 34 and an XL is a 36.
Should I size up or down?
Size up for a relaxed feel, or size down for a closer, athletic fit. The semi-elastic waistband and adjustable drawstring give you control within each size.
How should a compression liner fit?
Snug and supportive, close to your body, with no bunching or gaps, and never digging in. It should stay in place when you walk, sit and swim. The Aqua-Liner in every Tucann men's swim trunk replaces underwear.
What if I order the wrong size?
You can exchange it within 30 days of receiving your order. Start from our returns page, and see the refund policy for the full details.
Do swim trunks run small?
Sizing varies by brand, so go by measurements, not labels. Match your natural waist to the chart, not your usual shirt size.
